a lot fiddling around

AVM provides a proprietary licensed driver that is only tested on outdated SuSE Linux platforms and not updated since the initial release. Getting it to work in Ubuntu 8.04 requires modifying the drivers source code, compiling the kernel module yourself and getting it more or less to work: WPA/WPA2 works, no link-quality display, problems with Network-Manager. Why not release it as Free Software so people can improve, update and put it in a working state into every major Linux distribution?
Since Kernel Version 2.6.25-* proprietary WLAN drivers are not allowed any more. So in Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid Ibex one has to use NdisWrapper and the AVM Windows driver. Link quality is shown correctly, WPA/WPA2 works, but again problems with Network-Manager. Removing Network-Manager and configuring it manually with wpa_supplicant works. Establishing a connection takes a little long on startup, but works most of the time.
